About the poet
Kamla Das was popularly known by her one time penned name Madhavi Kutty and Amy(Ami). She was an Indian English poet as well as a leading Malayalam author from Kerala. She is noted for her poems which depict the problems of the women in the society, child care and also has autobiographical elements.

The poem 'an introduction' is present in the collection of poems 'summer in Calcutta 1965'.

Kamla Das got married at the age of 15. the poem is written in free verse in a colloquial style. It presents in a Frank and bolt manner the glimpse of the poet's life, her feelings and thoughts.


Explanation

'my blood turned like the moon'
she was almost frozen with fear like the moon after the death of the grandmother.

'just listen to the Frozen air'
the poet wants to go back to the old house and feel the still atmosphere of the house.

'or in wild despair'
since the poet is not able to go back and relieve the old memories the longing add to hopelessness.

'darkness to bring it here to lie behind my bedroom door like a brooding dog'
The poet wants to collect the darkness from her old house, some memories of our grandmother and bring back to her present City. The memory sofa grandmother's house will have a soothing impact on her loveless and hopeless married life.

The poet has used the simile of a brooding dog to show her inability to pay and visit to her grandmother's house.

The poet addresses her husband calling him darling and says that he would not believe that she used to live in such a house where she was proud, loved and honoured.

The poet was emotionally attached to the house since her childhood. The husband could never realise the love and affection that she once receive. She has become a beggar for love in knocks hopelessly at strangers doors to receive love in at least a small measure.

The poem my grandmother's house was published in 1905 in volume 'summer in Calcutta.' It is also an autobiographical poem in which the poet's longing for her grandmother's house in Malabar is described. The theme of love longing sadness and nostalgias is presented in the poem.

Kamla Das exposes the futility of love less and hopeless marital relationships in the poem. It is the loveless and hopeless married life that has destroyed her sense of pride and love which she used to have in her grandmother's house.
